The title is the short version of the mission statement from the South AfricanOlive Growers Association. The sentiment
captured our interest long before we set foot on the continent. It signaled a deep respect for the past and
what it can teach us while being unafraid to experiment and break with
tradition if necessary. Rich and I are
excited to learn how these aspirations are put into practice. What old world ideals do the South African
growers hold to be most dear? Do they
share one “new world vision?” Are the
South African people receptive to extra virgin olive oil in general and local
oils in particular? How does being the
relative newcomer in the international arena help or hinder the growers? We can’t wait to find out.
